The Bristol Police Department Awards Committee has selected Officer Daniel Colavolpe as Officer of the Year 2013.

On June 21, 2013, a press release from the Bristol Police Department explained, Colavolpe responded to a residence on Lincoln Street to what was originally logged as an anonymous noise complaint. Upon arrival, the police said, Colavolpe encountered a male victim with fatal injuries and numerous people yelling from a second floor apartment. He heard a male from the second floor say that he had just stabbed somebody.

Colavolpe immediately requested additional police units, said the release. Officer Myers was on scene and proceeded to tend to the victim and it was apparent that he was stabbed with an unknown edged weapon. Colavolpe had no other backup and reasonably believed the violent assailant was inside the apartment where other potential victims were, said police. Due to the exigency, Colavolpe tactically approached the second floor residence potentially placing himself in “grave and imminent personal danger,” said the release. He encountered four adults in the apartment and he proned them out at gunpoint. One of the adults was identified as the murderer and Colavolpe had reason to believe that the violent felon had access to the edged weapon, said police. Police said Colavolpe remained calm and alert and maintained a tactical advantage over the assailant until additional officers arrived on scene.

In short, the release said, “Officer Dan Colavolpe single-handedly located and engaged a murder suspect on scene, which resulted in the protection of life and the expedited conclusion of a major crime. For his actions, Officer Dan Colavolpe was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and Officer of the Month (June 2013) Award.”

The police said, “For his bravery and outstanding work performance throughout the Year 2013, Officer Daniel Colavolpe is now hereby awarded the Officer of the Year Award 2013.”

The Bristol Exchange Club will be hosting the annual Police Officer of the Year at Nuchie’s Restaurant on Monday,
